The vehicle provided under this agreement is rented according to the terms and conditions outlined below, which both the company representative and the customer have read, understood, and accepted.
1. Driver Requirements
The driver must be over the age of 21 and possess a valid driving license. Age-related fees apply as follows:
2. Rental Duration
The rental period is calculated in 24-hour increments, starting from the time the vehicle is made available to the renter.
3. Vehicle Condition
The vehicle is provided in good mechanical condition and must be returned in the same state at the end of the rental period.
4. Damage or Fault Reporting
The customer must inform Islander Car Rentals of any loss, damage, or faults. Continued use of a damaged or faulty vehicle is at the customer’s own risk.
5. Insurance and Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
Our rental vehicles are covered under a commercial fleet insurance policy, which may cover accidental damage when the vehicle is operated by an authorized renter. However, even when a claim is made through our insurance, the renter remains liable for:
To reduce this liability, renters may choose to add Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) for €10 per rental day. CDW is not an insurance product, but a contractual waiver that limits the renter’s financial responsibility to the applicable excess amount only and helps avoid an insurance claim in most minor damage cases.
A refundable pre-authorization will be held on the renter’s credit card for up to 30 days and will be released automatically by the cardholder’s bank.
6. Accident Reporting
In the event of an accident, the vehicle must remain in its final position and the customer must immediately report the incident by contacting Islander Car Rentals or local wardens at +356 21320502. Failure to comply may result in full liability for damages and/or claims.
7. Penalties and Fines
All traffic tickets, fines, and sanctions incurred during the rental period are the customer’s responsibility. Punctures can be repaired at most petrol stations or tire service centres. All fines must be settled at Islander. An administrative fee of €20 applies per fine without penalty points; fines involving penalty points incur a €40 administrative fee per violation.
8. Additional Charges for Negligence
The following charges apply for incidents due to customer negligence:
9. Controlled Vehicular Access (CVA) Charges
Vehicles entering Valletta incur a CVA charge. An administration fee of €20 will be added to the CVA charge. This can be avoided by parking outside the CVA zones.
10. Delegation of Rights
The customer delegates and subrogates Islander in any rights or remedies to seek indemnity or relief from third parties concerning any damage or loss to the vehicle during the rental period.
11. Customer’s Role
The customer is not an agent, servant, or employee of Islander.
12. Liability for Personal Property
Islander is not responsible for loss of or damage to any property left, stored, or transported in the vehicle.
13. Payment of Charges
All charges must be paid in advance or on demand as indicated.
14. Vehicle Repossession
Islander Car Rentals reserves the right to repossess the vehicle without notice if justified.
15. Fuel Policy
The vehicle must be returned with the same level of fuel as at pickup. Charges apply for shortages. No refunds for surplus fuel.
16. Authorized Drivers
Only drivers listed in the rental agreement are authorized and insured to operate the vehicle.
17. Geographic Limits
Vehicles may only be driven in Malta and Gozo. Driving in Comino, off-road, or in Sicily is strictly prohibited.
18. Cleanliness and Smoking Policy
Vehicles must be returned clean. A cleaning fee applies if necessary. Smoking and pets are prohibited. Penalty fees of up to €100 apply for non-compliance.
