Driver Requirements
The driver must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid driving licence. Additional age related charges apply as follows:
• Ages 21–24: €15 per day + optional coverage charges
• Ages 25–69: No additional age related fees
• Ages 70–75: €15 per day + optional coverage charges
Rental Duration
Rental periods are calculated in 24-hour increments from the agreed start time.
Vehicle Condition
The vehicle is provided in good mechanical and visual condition and must be returned in the same condition, fair wear and tear excepted.
Damage or Fault Reporting
The Renter must immediately report any damage, fault, or warning indication. Continued use of a damaged or unsafe vehicle is at the Renter’s own risk and liability.
Renter’s Liability
The Renter is fully liable for any loss, theft, or damage to the vehicle, including:
• Repair or replacement costs
• Loss of use
• Administrative and recovery costs
• Damage not covered by insurance (including but not limited to glass, tyres, underbody, and interior)
This liability applies unless a valid Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) has been purchased and is applicable.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
• CDW is available at €10 per day
• CDW is not insurance, but a contractual limitation of liability
• With CDW, liability is limited to an excess of €350–€1,000 depending on vehicle category and driver’s age group as defined in this Agreement.
• Loss-of-use charges are waived under CDW
• Minor cosmetic damage may be handled without insurance involvement
• Accidents involving third parties must be formally reported within 48 hours; excess applies
Accident Reporting
In the event of an accident:
• The vehicle must not be moved unless required for safety
• The Renter must immediately contact Islander Car Rentals at +356 77770052 and local wardens at +356 21320502. Failure to comply may result in full liability.
Traffic Fines & Penalties
All fines, penalties, and traffic violations incurred during the rental period are the responsibility of the Renter. For administrative and legal processing (including identification of the driver and handling of penalty points), fines must be processed through Islander Car Rentals unless otherwise agreed in writing.
An administration fee applies per violation: €20 + VAT (no penalty points), €40 + VAT (with penalty points)
This fee applies regardless of whether the fine is paid directly by the Renter or through Islander Car Rentals. The Renter authorizes Islander Car Rentals to charge the payment card provided for any fines and applicable administration fees. Charges may be processed during or after the rental period where necessary.
Negligence Charges
The following charges apply in cases of customer negligence:
• Flat battery / puncture assistance: €40 + VAT
• Locked-in keys: €60 + VAT
• Damaged tyres: full replacement cost
• Lost or broken keys: full replacement cost
Controlled Vehicular Access (CVA)
Entry into Valletta may incur a CVA charge. An administration fee of €20 + VAT applies per entry.
Delegation of Rights
The Renter assigns Islander Car Rentals the right to recover costs or claim against third parties relating to damage or loss during the rental period.
Independent Status
The Renter is not an agent, employee, or representative of Islander Car Rentals.
Personal Property
Islander Car Rentals is not responsible for loss or damage to personal belongings left in the vehicle.
Payment Terms
All rental charges and additional fees are payable in advance or on demand. The Renter authorizes charges to the provided payment method where applicable.
Repossession
Islander Car Rentals reserves the right to repossess the vehicle without prior notice if the terms of this Agreement are breached.
Fuel Policy
The vehicle must be returned with the same fuel level as provided. Charges apply for shortages. No refunds for excess fuel.
Authorized Drivers
Only drivers listed in the Agreement are permitted to operate the vehicle.
Geographic Restrictions
Vehicles may only be used within Malta and Gozo. Use in Comino, off-road areas, or outside Malta is strictly prohibited.
Cleanliness & Use Policy
Vehicles must be returned in a clean condition. Cleaning fees apply where necessary. Smoking and pets are prohibited. Penalties of up to €100 may apply.
Late Returns
Late returns may incur additional charges. Extensions are subject to availability.
Delivery & Collection
Delivery and collection services are chargeable per direction.
Airport Service
Airport delivery/collection: €25 (office hours), €35 (out-of-hours)
Card Authorization
The Renter expressly authorizes Islander Car Rentals to charge the provided payment method for any amounts due under this Agreement, including damages, fines, penalties, administrative fees, and any other applicable charges, during or after the rental period.
Vehicle Return & Inspection
Vehicle must be returned in a condition suitable for inspection. If excessively dirty, Islander Car Rentals may clean it before completing a final inspection. Any damage beyond normal wear and tear identified after cleaning may be charged to the Renter. Photos or videos may be used as evidence.
Full Liability Exceptions
The Renter remains fully liable (regardless of CDW) in cases including but not limited to:
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
• Reckless or negligent driving
• Breach of traffic laws or criminal offences
• Off-road or unauthorized use
• Damage to interior, keys, tyres, undercarriage, or accessories
• Incorrect fuel use
• Theft due to negligence (e.g. keys left in vehicle)
• Failure to report accidents as required
• Any fines, penalties, and associated administrative fees
